Lady Cavs bring home 1st District 7-AAA championship
Cavaliers end season with loss to Riverdale

The regular basketball season is now over, and both the Cavs and the Lady Cavs had excellent seasons.

In post-season play, the Lady Cavs brought home their first District championship.

The 50-37 victory described by guard Ashley Taylor as “amazing” was made even sweeter because it was a third victory over local arch rival White County.

Both the Cavs and the Lady Cavs stormed through the season with impressive records and numerous victories.

The men’s team whose record is 19-9, finished the regular season with a game loss to Lawrence County High.

The Lady Cavs, whose record is 23-6, also suffered a 51-41 loss against Lawrence County in the regular season ender.

In post-season play, the men’s team lost to Riverdale High School at Blackman on Monday, February 24 with a score of 48-37dashing hopes for further advancement in the district tournament.

Cavalier senior guard, Mario Burnett was named District 7-AAA Player of the Year in voting by the coaches of the district after racking up over 1,000 points during his career with the Cavs.

Bobby Allmon was named to the All-District team and Blake Weaver was named with honorable mention.

In the semi-final round of the women’s tournament, the top seeded Lady Cavs faced Oakland after a week off from play.

The down time from regular play didn’t hamper the girls efforts or dampen their enthusiasm.

After jumping to an early lead over Oakland, the game went back and forth between the two teams.

The game remained close with the Lady Cavs claiming victory in the last minutes with exceptional performance at the free throw line putting in 18 of 20 attempts as well as outrebounding Oakland.

Leading the scoring for the Lady Cavs were senior Ashley Taylor with 20 points and 5 assists, junior Cara Reed with 19, and senior Erica McDonald with 8.

In the championship game, it was payback time after a loss to White County two years ago dashed the Lady Cavs hopes for the championship then.

White County came into the game playing its third game in three days while the Lady Cavs had play were playing their second consecutive game.

The chance for revenge spurred on the girls to step up and take control of the game early in the first quarter.

Cara Reed said, “We knew coming out we had to push the ball and get ahead of them.”

The Lady Cavs extended their lead as the game wore on but were challenged in the third quarter when White County narrowed the lead to 25-20.
By the time the buzzer sounded, a three pointer by junior Megan Allen, put the Lady Cavs firmly back in control with a lead of 14 points.
During the 4th quarter after drawing to within 8 points of the Lady Cavs, White County ran into foul trouble with the Lady Cavs sinking 17 of 28 from the free throw line.

The win gives the Lady Cavs the No. 1 seed position going into the regional tournament.

Lady Cav coach Minday Odom was named Coach of the Year in Region 7-AAA with Cookeville standouts Ashley Taylor, Cara Reed, and Meredith Redus earning All-district honors.

Both teams represent Cookeville High School very well and their accomplishments are appreciated by both faculty and student body.
