Brent Chaffin named CHS’s Teacher of the Year

Emilee Chaffin, Associate Editor

Most of the students and faculty at CHS cannot help but laugh when they hear Coach Chaffin’s name.
Everyone knows him as the big cut-up who always has a million stories to tell, but each story teaches a lesson.

Recently, Chaffin was elected CHS’s Teacher of the Year by his colleagues. Coach Chaffin has been teaching for sixteen years and teaches phycology, sociology, and American history.

He enjoys every aspect of teaching and of his home life. He has three daughters- Kaitlin, twelve; Molly, nine; and Lily, two; to whom he credits most all of the stories he shares.

His room is decorated with the childhood pictures and drawings from his daughters along with the notes saying, “Daddy, I really am running away this time, I can’t stand Kaitlin!”

The Dixie Chicks also decorate the walls of his room, and when asked why, Chaffin revealed his fondness for Marty, the fiddle player.

Chaffin teaches for the students. “I love to help the students and, to me, it’s all about them.”

He credited much of his teaching methods and styles to other teachers here at CHS.

He said he has so much respect for the teachers he once had in high school. He lovingly mentioned English teacher Carol Ivey as being a teacher he struggled with, but had so much respect for in the end.

Ivey said, “He was a good student from what I can remember. He got in trouble often, but I always liked him.”

He says to that, “If you want to see the rainbow, you’ve got to put up with the rain.”

Teachers, as well as students, have wonderful things to say about him. History teacher Sharon Anderson says, “This honor is long overdue to Coach Chaffin. He has a unique way of teaching and can often reach students others can’t.”

Chaffin enjoys teaching so much that he said it was what he would choose to do over most anything, except“being King of America,” because all his opinions are always right.

Since that probably won’t be happening soon, Chaffin has picked a wonderful way to spread his opinions about life and his stories about his daughters because, “You can’t control the wind, but you can control the sails.”

“If you’re going to be a bear, be a grizzly,” is his favorite quote.

He has lived up to this by leaving a memorable impression on all his students..whether it be by teaching class with his fly accidentally down (three times) or getting his hand stuck in the chalkboards at the old school.
One way or another Coach Chaffin is leaving his mark on the history of CHS.
