Quiznos, a quick and inexpensive lunch

Oven-baked sandwiches. Those three words let you know where we food critics landed in our search for the perfect restaurant in Cookeville--Quiznos. Located next to Nick’s, Quiznos is a small dining establishment that is perfect for a quick, inexpensive lunch.

Having never been to a Quiznos before, Nicole Pullen, Molly Risley, Yamini Rao, and I stood in line for about five minutes, pondering what was on each sandwich (and probably talking too loudly about what we didn’t want to be on them). Finally a worker pointed out a menu that explained what was on each sandwich.

The menu was an excellent idea. After looking it over, Yamini ordered a Mesquite Chicken and Bacon Sandwich, while Molly ventured out and got the Classic Italian Sandwich. I chose the Turkey Ranch and Swiss, and Nicole ordered the Chicken, Bacon, and Guacamole--hold the bacon. But a word of advice--on the menu is a sandwich called the “Beefeater.” Easy to read, not hard to pronounce. But at first glance, it looks a little like “Beefanator.” Just be careful about how you say it.

You wouldn’t think that simply baking the sandwiches would drastically change the taste, but it caused their food to be much better than Subway. The special sauces also added extra flair to the food. All the sandwiches were great, but there was kind of a mystery meat on Molly’s. The meat was called capicola, an Italian meat that should taste like salami. I don’t know how it tasted, but I sure know what it looked like--a slice of meat consisting of mostly a big ribbon of fat running all over it. It was removed from the sandwich as soon as Molly discovered its existence.

Molly bought a chocolate bundt cake that the four of us shared. It, didn’t last very long. Who says prepackaged food isn’t good?

The restaurant itself is very homey. Red and green chairs are placed around both tall and short tables, and all over the wall are paintings of Italian advertisments. Some were easy enough to read, but a couple presented somewhat of a challenging.

The “Quiznos experience” was excellent. At last we were able to grant another restaurant four stars. Perfect in both food and atmosphere, Quiznos is definitely a winner.
