It’s the thought that counts

Valentine’s Day might be one of the most dreaded days in the life of a single -- but this doesn’t mean people in relationships welcome it with open arms.

Yes, I am in a relationship. Yes, I love being in a relationship. But this doesn’t help my situation any better.
I have a dilemma: what do you get a guy for Valentine’s Day? And even more importantly, what kind of gift will he like?

Something mushy, romantic, sweet? Something that will profess my undying devotion? Wait a minute... this is an 18-year-old guy. Won’t something like this scare him away?

So this leads me to think that maybe I should get him -- Joey -- something that’s funny or joking. After all, how often do guys take things seriously?

Of course, ladies, it all depends on your guy’s personality, right? Romantic gifts for the romantic guy; funny gifts for the funny guy.

But I think gifts should be creative, thoughtful and personal. This is a typical thought of girls -- but guys?

A Budweiser commercial aired during the Superbowl seemed to demonstrate the comical, if not completely true, difference between guys and girls: it showed a woman pacing the aisle of a store, looking at every “love” card in hopes of finding the special one for her guy. On the other hand, her boyfriend happened to be buying beer at a convenience store when he hastily picked up her Valentine’s Day card.

While I think my boyfriend will choose his gift for me more thoughtfully (won’t all girls think that?), it does seem that girls spend a longer amount of time choosing gifts.

It’s hard to think of new, original ideas for gifts. Joe’s birthday in September and then Christmas seem to have zapped every ounce of my creativity.

And then there’s Valentine’s Day itself. So much love is wrapped around February 14, with cupids and candy come pressure: the day for love, and happiness must be a good day with no arguments.

In all the expectation and pressure of being in a relationship on Valentine’s Day, it’s easy to forget what the day of hearts and roses is all about: celebrating your love and adoration for your boyfriend (or girlfriend) and actually showing the person how much he means to you.

If not on any other day, on Valentine’s Day it is a good time to think about what this person means in your life. Take the time this year to communicate your feelings to your special someone and strengthen your bond.
