Lady Cavs fare well at Commando Classic

From Staff Reports

HENDERSONVILLE -- The Cookeville softball team got some solid competition and experienced some success this weekend heading into its District 6-AAA schedule. The Lady Cavs won five games and made it to the quarterfinals of Hendersonville's Commando Classic, giving them a boost as they prepare for the most important part of the regular season. The Lady Cavs' lone loss came to tournament runner-up Marshall County, a 2-0 defeat Saturday in the round of eight. The loss came after they had defeated Clarksville Northeast 8-1, Smyrna 1-0 and Pope John Paul II 7-0 earlier Saturday. On Friday, CHS edged Sycamore 1-0 and defeated Mt. Juliet 2-0.
"I do feel like we had a good showing," Cookeville coach Jeff Williams said. "We're young, and I think this was a real confidence boost for us to see that we can play against some other triple-A teams. "And the team we got beat by, they were a double-A team, but they're a solid double-A that's had years of being in the state tournament and going a long way. They had the best pitcher that we faced the whole tournament."

Against Marshall County, the Tigerettes scored two runs in the first inning and held on to advance to the semifinals, where they defeated Riverdale.

The Lady Cavs jumped ahead against Clarksville Northeast with two runs in the first inning to go up 2-1, and pitcher Jenny Hallums kept the Lady Eagles at bay the rest of the contest.

Against Smyrna, pitcher Katie Morris kept the Lady Bulldogs off balance and gave up just one hit to help the Lady Cavs eke by for a win.

Cookeville had no trouble beating PJPII, as Morris pitched three innings to get the win and Hallums closed out the game. Hallums helped her own cause, blasting a two-run homer. In that contest, Williams was able to go deep into the bench and get younger players some experience.

In their win over Sycamore, Megan Winningham singled home Courtney Hutcherson for their lone run, and Hallums threw a six-inning shutout.

In the opener, it was Morris tossing the six-inning shutout. Heather Smith scored on a fielder's choice in the third inning. Later, Hutcherson ripped a triple to left field, but was able to come around for an inside-the-park homer on an error to account for the Lady Cavs' other run. Winningham had a solid game, finishing 3-for-3 against the Lady Bears.

Williams said he saw some improvement from his team during the tournament. "Our defense picked up," Williams said. "We got some bunts down and manufactured some runs, so we're starting to step it up and do a few things better that way." Weather permitting, the Lady Cavs (5-3) will travel to Cumberland County today for a 5:30 p.m. matchup to open District 6-AAA play. Williams said this part of the season is why his team plays in tournaments like the Commando Classic. "These tournaments are kind of just a lead-up to the district," he said "If we go to these tournaments and see good teams and get better, that should help us for our district, we hope."
