Students who received a letter in their 1st period class asking them to take a survey for the IB Program should plan to meet in Ms. Carolyn Hawkins’ room (223) during lunch on Wednesday, May 11 or Thursday, May 12, to complete the survey. This is an important survey that will take only a few minutes for students to complete. Teachers, please remind the students to report to Ms. Carolyn Hawkins’ room.

Everyone come out and watch the CHS Men’s Soccer team in the first game of the district tournament tonight at home at 7 pm. Admission is $5 for everyone since it is a tournament game.

The State Speech and Drama Tournament was held this weekend in Morristown, TN. Cookeville High School’s Elissa Longfellow took 4th place in the state in Poetry Interpretation. Congratulations, Elissa!

All Interact Members: Friday, May 6th is the Cane Creek Interact Initiation Party. Please come by the Interact Board across from room 272 and sign-up to bring various items and to help set up. This will be our last official meeting of the year. We are in desperate need of assistance. There will be Cavalier necklaces made out of resin for sale in the commons area during lunch on Wed and Thurs. The cost is $20 for a necklace, with $5 of each necklace being donated to Project Graduation.

We would like to congratulate all the students who competed at the State SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills competition in Chattanooga on Tuesday. CHS competed in 15 different contests. Bring home medals were Alex Farris- 3rd place in Architectural Drafting, Andrew Williams- 2nd place in Computer Programming and Kelly Johnson- 2nd place in Esthetics and model Batreeze Williams. Way to Go CTE students.

Congratulations to the Lady Cavaliers Junior Varsity Softball team who won the Plataea Invitational JV division tournament in Crossville this weekend. The Lady Cavs defeated White County 3 times and Cumberland County once to clinch the victory. The next home game is Thursday April 14th versus Obion County; we hope to see you there!

9th grade academy only Teachers must accompany class and help with supervision in commons and cafeteria If you wish to attend only for a part of the period, please come with your class the second portion of 1st period All students will be released at the end of 1st period
2nd period
10th-12th grades Teachers must accompany class and help with supervision in commons and cafeteria, If you have 9t9h grade students with you, you may bring them with you If you wish to attend for only a part of the period, please come with your class the second portion of 2nd period. Once you release students for the health fair, they will not be allowed to leave the cafeteria/commons area. Attendance at the health fair is not mandatory. If you choose not to send your entire class, please do not send individual students. We are going to try and not allow students to leave the commons or cafeteria until the end of second period. Also, please do not park in front of the gym on Tuesday AM as community presenters have been asked to park in those spaces.

Please come to the CHS Men’s Soccer Varsity home game today at 6:30pm. All regular season men’s soccer games are free for students, $5 for adults.
Congratulation to the Lady Cavaliers Softball team who beat district rivals, the Cumberland County Jets 10-1 last night. We play at home again this coming Monday versus Gordonsville. The JV game begins at 5:30 and the Varsity game starts at 7. Remember students and teachers get in free with your ID. We hope to see you there!

Circus Olympus opens on Thursday, March 31st at 7:00 in the CHS auditorium. The house will open at 6:30 and you can buy tickets for $5 at the door. Come and enjoy some acrobatics, juggling, mixed in with some Greek gods and some general clowning around. The play can also be seen on April 1st, 2nd, 5th, 12th, and 15th.
National Honor Society members: Please see Mrs. Johnson today if you plan to tutor at Northeast on Thursday. The Herald Citizen will be coming to do an article for the paper and we need a press release signed by a parent.

Attention ALL Seniors, Woodmen of the World is offering a $500 scholarship. This scholarship is available to all Seniors who plan to attend any college, and does not have any GPA or financial requirements. For a chance at this great opportunity, applications are available in the 2nd floor counseling office.
Attention all students ages 14-18 with A through C grade average interested in volunteering at Cookeville Regional Hospital this summer come to the counseling office on the 2nd floor to pick up an application. Students with a C average must also have a letter of recommendation from their school counselor. Positions are filled on a “first come, first serve” basis, so don’t delay.

Prom Bids will go on sale beginning April 4th and will continue through April 15th. You may purchase a prom bid during lunch only in Mrs. Winchester’s office. You will need your student ID to do so. Prom bids are $50 per person - $100 per couple. If your date does not attend CHS, then he or she must have met approval by Mr. Shanks’ office.

Our second CHS coke sale is now underway. The following clubs will be selling cokes and may begin taking orders next week. Drama, FFA, Band, Culinary Arts, Habitat for Humanity, Boy’s Basketball and the National Spanish Honor Society. This coke sale will continue through March 28th – the day that orders should be turned into sponsors. Remember – there will be a tailgate tent awarded to the student that sells the most cases of cokes and coke products.
Students – Due to Mrs. Winchester being in a meeting yesterday, I have extended the grace period to get your parking violations taken care of through Wednesday, March 23 – that is the week we return. Please be sure to bring your parking violation and see me during lunch before that time. Anyone not taken care of after that time will be contacted by an administrator.

Faculty, Staff and Students, Yesterday we conducted a parking lot check. If you received a ticket on your window, you should see Mrs. Winchester during lunch before Spring Break to take care of your ticket. We will see all students in the commons office when we return from spring break that failed to take care of parking violations.

Any student taking an online course that ends during Spring Break week, must take the course final exam BEFORE leaving on Spring Break.
Any student who wishes to take an online course 4th nine weeks needs to see Mrs. Schinbeckler in Room 220. The deadline to register is March 21st.
Any student interested in taking an online Vol State Dual Enrollment class this summer or next school year, please see Mrs. Schinbeckler in room 220 for more information. Vol State offers both academic and Career /Technical Dual Enrollment courses. The deadline to register is April 15th.
The Vital Program is now offering online Career/Technical courses through the Tennessee Technology Center at Livingston. These courses may be used to fulfill your FOCUS requirements. If you would like more information, please see MRs. Schinbeckler in room 220.

If your teacher is participating in the LEO club Key Chain Drive, you will automatically win a prize for donating this aid for the blind. The key chains collected will be used to personalize white canes for students attending Tennessee School for the Blind. The drive will last from Tuesday to Friday. Bring your key chains!

Attention Rising 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students, registration for next year’s classes begins Monday, February 28th. Rising 10th graders will register through your English classes, and Rising 11th and 12th graders will register during lunch from Monday February 28th through March 9th. This is a very important process, so please select your classes wisely.
New for this year is a competition! The class that registers the highest percentage of students will get an ice cream social. Also, Mr. Shanks has purchased iPods to be raffled off once registration is complete, you must register for classes to be eligible for an iPod.
Again, make sure you register for your classes at lunch, then turn in your registration sheet to your counselor AFTER you register. For more information please see your counselor during lunch.

Congratulations to the Cookeville High School Science Bowl who competed in the state science bowl competition over the weekend. The team consisted of Tiangi Gao, David Jiang, Lisa Gong and Daniel BaDoe. The team finished in the top 8 of the tournament which involved 48 teams from 40 different schools from across the state.
Today is the last opportunity to purchase a pencil to win the IPod Touch to be given away by the bookstore. The bookstore will be open at lunch and the drawing will be held this afternoon. The cost of the pencil is $1.00.
Please remember to bring your toiletries and can food items this week. Beginning tomorrow we will start collecting items from 1st period classes. The top two classes get a donut party. Items will benefit local food banks as well as Mustard Seed Ranch and Happy Haven.

The DECA Club is in the process of raising funds to allow the regional winners to compete at the state level. To that end the bookstore will sell #2 pencils for $1.00. Each pencil purchased will come with a ticket that will enter the purchaser into a drawing to be held on Monday, Feb. 21. The grand prize will be an IPod valued at $225.00. There will be three additional drawings for warm-up suits supplied by the bookstore. You may enter as many times as you wish. Look for the table in the commons area during lunch. Pencils may be purchase at the bookstore at any time.

The Virtual Enterprise class will be selling Valentine-grams in order to raise money for their international competition in New York in April. The Valentine-grams will be sold every day this week during lunch for a dollar. Buy a Valentine-grams this week and it will be delivered to your valentine during first period on Valentine’s Day, Monday, February 14.
Students, fewer than 100 yearbooks remain on sale at Smart-Pay. Look for signs around school or ask Mrs. Leimer in room 227 during the second half of lunch for more information. Sales end February 12 or when books sell out. Students who would like to apply for the 2011-2012 yearbook staff may pick up an application outside room 227 this week. The CHS Speech made an awesome showing at the Forensics Tournament in Clarksville this weekend. Braving the weather, our brave competitors all qualified for the final round in their event with Kayla Frye coming in 4th place in Prose Interpretation, Greta Hoffman won 4th in Dramatic Interpretation, and Elissa Longfellow captured 2nd in Poetry! Congratulations to our Speech Team Ladies! Great work!!!

Try-outs for the CHS Men’s Soccer team will be Feb 14-Feb 16 at the CHS soccer field. Bring your cleats and running shoes. You must have a sports physical form and a signed drug testing form to be eligible to try out.
Seniors (Class of 2011), For those of you that are considering inviting a guest (non-CHS student) to our Senior Prom, you are required to submit your request in writing for administrative approval no later than Tuesday March 01. Please only one written request per student. The request must include a photocopy of the visitor’s driver’s license and include three references with complete contact information for each. Any seniors interested in majoring in education at TTU have the opportunity of apply for a scholarship from the Retired Teachers Association. Go to the 2nd Floor Counseling Office for the application. All seniors who attend a four-year college, community college or career school can apply for a scholarship from $500-1,000 dollars. It is quick and easy with No minimum ACT score, No essay and it No lengthy application. Go the 2nd floor Counseling office to pick up information how to apply.
Summer Program Information is available in the 2nd Floor Counseling Office for the UT College of Veterinary Medicine Summer Experience Program for rising Juniors and Seniors, UT College of Engineering summer enrichment programs for rising 7th-12th graders, and Vanderbilt’s Pave program to explore science, engineering, medical or technology based careers for current Juniors. Go to the 2nd floor Counseling office to pick up information for these programs.

CHS hosted the school contest for Poetry Out Loud yesterday. All of the competitors gave wonderful performances and made for a very entertaining experience for our audience. Each student spent hours outside of school to prepare for the competition. They memorized, interpreted, and recited two poems, one of 25 lines or less and one published before the 20th century. Derion Johnson was awarded 3rd place; Sarah Cooper, 2nd place; and our grand prize, 1st place winner was Kayla Frye! Kayla will represent Cookeville High School in Nashville at the state competition in March with the chance to move on to the National Competition in Washington, DC. Congratulations to all those who worked so hard and to our champions! And thank you to our judges who gave their time to watch our CHS students shine: Mrs. Gail Luna, Executive Director of the Bryan Symphony Orchestra, Mr. Hal Denton, retired CHS teacher, Ms. Binney Stumpf, our ESL/ELL teacher, and Ms. Ginny Poteet, CHS librarian.

The writing assessment will be give to all 11th grade students Feb.1st. It will be given during second period which will run from 8:50-10:15. Teachers should dismiss students to the designated room as soon as attendance is taking in 2nd period. All Junior English teachers and any teacher that has a second period plan time will be testing. Anyone who wishes to order a 2011 Cavalier yearbook must do so no later than January 10, 2011. No orders will be accepted after that date. Students may pick up order forms inside the CHS main office or outside room 227. Posters including ordering information are also posted throughout the building.
Freshmen who wish to check their photos/names for the 2011 yearbook should come by room 227 on Monday, January 10 through Thursday, January 13. These are the only days to check photos/names for freshmen.
There will not be an Interact Board meeting this afternoon. It is rescheduled for Tuesday, January 11th, there will be a short Interact Board Meeting in room 272 at 3:15pm. All Interact Board members and class representatives will need to attend. At 6:30pm Tuesday, January 11th, the entire Interact Club will meet at St. Michael's Episcopal Church.

The Interact CLUB will meet for a Christmas Party at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church on Tuesday, 12/14/10 at 6:30pm. The Interact Juniors are to provide snack food for the party. EVERYONE is to bring a pair of shoes or more for the Soles4Souls project that evening for a credit. The more shoes the more people we serve.

Poetry Out Loud!
Cookeville High School will be hosting the school competition for Poetry Out Loud in January. If you are a student who is interested in recitation and performance poetry, please consider participating. For the CHS competition, students will be required to memorize and perform two poems, one of 25 lines or shorter and one written before the 20th century.
An informational meeting for those interested will be held Monday, December 6 in Mrs. Stockwell’s room, 247, at 3:00.
The Poetry Out Loud program was created by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation and is administered by the Tennessee Arts Commission. The school winner will advance to the state competition, the winner of which will receive $200 and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. (with an adult chaperone) to compete at the national finals!
See Mrs. Stockwell or be in room 247 after school on Monday!

CHS Swim team traveled to Nashville last Wednesday to face University School of Nashville and Centennial. The CHS Speech Team travelled this weekend to Dickson, Tennessee. Our fearless competitors woke up way too early on a Saturday morning to bring accolades to Cookeville High School. Our Elissa Longfellow soundly slew all comers in Poetry Interpretation, disappointing 21 other middle Tennessee schools and their bravest warriors! Bravo, Elissa, our Poetry Grand Champion! Not to be left out, Kayla Frye, Alex Mattingly, Nick Pieper, and Tyler Eskander showed no fear and left many other defenders in the dust! Congratulations, Cookeville High School Speech Team!

All 16 year olds will need a parental consent form signed in INK on the day of the blood drive. If you don’t have a consent form by Wednesday, 11/17 come by room 272 for a form. Make sure you have eaten a good breakfast and drink plenty of fluids on Monday, Nov. 22nd if you are giving blood. Thank you for helping us save local lives. All blood goes to CRMC. It’s Art Prowl time in Cookeville this weekend on Friday and Saturday, November 5 and 6. Come out and support your school! The CHS display by Ms. Watts’ art students will be exhibited in the Arcade Building on the square at 9 South Jefferson Ave.
The Art Prowl features exceptional artists from our region. This year includes a special show called “Recreate” featuring art made from recycled materials. Get a map of all the sights and come see the outstanding artists of CHS!
The CHS football team will begin the first round of the TSSAA playoffs on Friday night November 5, 2010 at home against Oak Ridge. This is a very important game for our team. The CHS cheerleaders would like to encourage all students, faculty, and staff to come out in force to support our team.
We will be having a pep rally Friday during lunch to show support for our football team. Please be ready to cheer our Cavs on to a first round playoff victory. The pep rally will begin at 11:40 am in the CHS gym.

PLAN TEST FOR ALL 10TH GRADE STUDENTS AT COOKEVILLE HIGH SCHOOL OCTOBER 28, 2010 The PLAN test will be given to all 10th grade students on the morning of October 28, 2010 at Cookeville High School. The PLAN test is a pre-Act test given to all 10th grade students. Taking PLAN is a great way to prepare for the ACT test. It covers the same subjects and gives an estimated ACT score. PLAN also lets students know if they are on track for college, points out academic strengths and areas needed for improvement, and helps finds careers that match your interests. Students who take PLAN score higher on the ACT than those who do not.
TTU is currently registering students for ACT prep classes, which will begin on Nov. 2 and meet on Tuesdays from 6-8 through Dec. 7. The Cookeville High School Cheerleaders will be collecting donations on Friday Oct.1st during first period to benefit the recent flood victims in Putnam County. Many of our senior citizens find that they are not eligible for insurance or government funds to rebuild their homes. Lets all band together in the true Cavalier spirit and gave all of our spare change for this worthy cause. The first period collecting the most funds will be rewarded with some tasty refreshments after fall break.
Any girl interested in trying out for a position on the basketball cheer squad should check the white board outside Ms. Huffine’s door …room 264. We will select three new squad members. Cheer and tumbling experience a requirement. All interested parties must tryout.
All 10th grade students will be taking the PLAN TEST, a pre-ACT test, on Thursday, October 28th during the first 4 periods. Stay tuned for more information to follow after Fall Break.
Any student needing or wanting to sign up for a VITAL online course for the second 9 weeks needs to come by room 220 and see Mrs. Schinbeckler no later than Thursday afternoon in order to get registered.

Blood Drive sign-ups are this week. All student drivers that donate blood and have already purchased parking will be entered into the drawing when they arrive to give blood. They can't just sign up to give blood to be entered--they must actually donate. Whoever wins will be allowed to park in the front row of the student parking lot for the entire month of November. Donating blood will help 3 people’s lives in our area. The donated blood goes to CRMC. Please, help Interact by donating blood.

The CHS Speech Team traveled this weekend Portland, TN. Over 350 students from 27 schools met to create some fierce competition. Our Elissa Longfellow made a wonderful showing in her first tournament of the year, placing 5th in Poetry Interpretation! Bravo, Elissa and the rest of our fearless competitors!!!
Beta Club Members will have their yearbook photograph taken this Wednesday at 11:45 on the large spiral staircase during lunch break. The PSAT/National Merit Qualifying Scholarship Test will be given at Cookeville High School On Saturday, October 16, 2010 at 9:00 a.m. Taking the PSAT/NMQT enables students to practice for the SAT, to enter scholarship competitions, and to seek information from colleges. Students shall be provided a safe learning environment. It is a violation for any student to bully, intimidate or create a hostile educational environment for another student.
Bullying and intimidation are defined as either physically harming a student or damaging his/her property, or knowingly placing the student in reasonable fear of such, or creating a hostile educational environment.
The policy addresses conduct taking place on school grounds, at any school-sponsored activity, on school-provided transportation, or at any official school bus stop immediately before boarding and immediately following bus unloading.
Alleged victims shall report these incidents immediately to a teacher, counselor or building administrator. Any allegations shall be fully investigated. The privacy and anonymity of all parties and witnesses to complaints will be respected.
Everyone: Each of us has the responsibility to help CHS eliminate bullying and intimidation from our buses, classrooms, locker areas, locker rooms, restrooms, stairwells, hallways and any other areas of campus. We must NOT tolerate this type of unacceptable behavior! We must report it!
